Unusual Extreme Sports You've Probably Never Heard Of
So you’re been through the regular adventure activities – bungee jumping, scuba diving, sky diving (and uploaded your profile picture to a shot of you falling from the sky, screaming with glee). Now you're open for more unique experiences! This is the time to start looking for something seriously different – adventure activities that are unusual, exciting and haven’t been done endlessly. Bring your friends together and plan a great adventure - Read on!
Underwater hockey in the UK: Imagine playing an intense, high-speed game while tumbling over your teammates. Now, do it all while holding your breath – that is underwater hockey for you. This utterly bizarre game is based on the rules of hockey, except that players must also wear swimsuits, fins and a snorkel mask. The three-dimensional playing field adds excitement. Underwater hockey is now wildly popular in the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa (there is even an Underwater Hockey World Championship held, fancy that!). This is an adventure activity that also needs skill and spunk. So are you ready to take the plunge?
Wife carrying in Finland: If you’re looking for an adventure activity that is seriously unconventional to do with your better half, look no further. Sonkajarvi, a charming town in Finland hosts an annual ‘Wife Carrying’ competition through an obstacle course. Each male competitor has to carry a female throughout the entire race in one of three ways: piggyback, a fireman’s lift (over the shoulder) or Estonian style (the wife hangs upside down with her legs around the husband’s shoulders). Of course, before you run the course you will have to qualify for it at one of the notoriously competitive qualifying events held around the world.
Extreme Ironing: I’m sure the title made you do a double take – yes, Extreme Ironing really is a thing! According to its official Facebook page, it "combines the thrill of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt." Participants take ironing boards to remote locations and iron items of clothing while engaging in other adventure activities such as sky diving, rock climbing, stand-up paddle boarding and more. Lets just say that mundane household chores never seemed this exciting!
Flyboarding in Goa: Just when you thought you’d run out of crazy stuff to do in Goa (having visited every shack on every beach in the state), something new crops up. Flyboarding is an adventure that’s sure to get your adrenalin pumping. The sport, which is an international craze, was recently introduced at Baina Beach in Goa. It is a combination of jet-ski and jetpack, where the jetpack sends the flyboard, attached to the jet-ski, to about 15 meters high in the air. Thrill guaranteed!
River Caving in Meghalaya: If you’re up for an adventure that will have most spooked, visit the KremChyme river cave in Meghalaya for the experience of a lifetime. The cave is accessible by swimming through the lakes formed inside the cave for about three kilometres. After this, you can explore it using rafts, canoes, or kayaks. The cave covers a distance of close to ten square kilometres, making it among the largets caves in the country. What’s special is that the cave is known for inhabiting cave-adaptable fish and bats in large numbers. In case you’re wondering, the expedition is organised with full gear – kayaks, packrafts, helmets, pedals, life jackets, and other required equipment.
Freestyle Powerisers Stilts: This is next level stuff – you have to see it (and then experience it) to understand. This extreme sport uses jumping stilts or spring stilts – special stilts that allow the user to run, jump and perform various acrobatics. Awesomely, this could be classified just as easily as an adventure sport, an artistic expression or just pure exercise.
