India is stunning - across its length and breath, there are just so many locations that just lend themselves to movie locales. And we aren't just talking about Indian movies, but the numerous Hollywood movies that have also been shot in India. Right from 'The Dark Knight Rises' (shot in Jodhpur) to the 'Life of Pi' (in Puducherry), it's an interesting list that is sure to give you some serious wanderlust (or new places to add to the travel bucket list). If you love movies, you'll probably also recognise more than a few names on this list!
1. The Dark Knight Rises
As the story goes, Christopher Nolan was in India for a visit before this movie happened – and he absolutely fell in love with Rajasthan. So when he began shooting ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, he decided to shoot the correctional facility escape scene of Batman at the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.
2. Mission Impossible 4
The climax scenes of ‘Mission Impossible 4’ was shot in India – specifically, in the colourful and chaotic by-lanes of Bora Bazaar in Mumbai. Additionally, a few scenes were also shot at the Sun TV office in Bengaluru.
3. Life of Pi
This fantastic movie may be most famous for its tiger and tale of survival, but the inital story was shot in Puducherry, the beautiful erstwhile French colony. The zoo scenes (where Pi’s father works) were shot at the Botanical Gardens in the city. You will also recognise the Pondicherry pier, on which Pi bids his love a sad farewell; and the town's idyllic French Quarter.
4. A Mighty Heart
Based on the murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl, this moving film was shot in Pune (instead of Karachi, as was actually the case) due to safety concerns. The film starred Angelina Jolie. The Nayansukh bungalow in Sindhi Society, Aundh masqueraded as the Karachi home of Pearl.
5. Eat Pray Love
India forms an important part of this iconic movie – as Julia Roberts visits India to introspect and implore (the ‘pray’ portion of the movie’s title). The movie’s scenes were shot at the Ashram Hari Mandir in Pataudi, Haryana.
6. Zero Dark Thirty
This movie on how the American intelligence tracked down and then killed Osama Bin Laden was shot in the lanes of Chandigarh. The movie makers worked hard to make Chandigarh give the feel of Lahore and Abbottabad.
7. The Bourne Supremacy
This second installment in the famous Bourne movie series starring Matt Damon was shot in India’s favourite beach state, Goa. Bourne’s hideaway is on the isolated white sand Palolem Beachin Southern Goa while the market town featured in the movie is none other than Goa’s capital, Panaji (Panjim).
8. Slumdog Millionaire
This list would not be compete without this movie on it, right? The Oscar winning movie that made Dev Patel, Freida Pinto and AR Rahman world famous was shot in the Dharavi area of Mumbai. The movie's final dance sequence was filmed around the famous CST Terminus (which is incidentally a World Heritage site).
This classic James Bond film (released in 1983) showed Bond (played by the dashing Roger Moore) in beautiful Udaipur. Shiv Niwas Palace is the hotel where Bond stays in the movie Octopussy. the Taj Lake Palace and Jag Mandir Palace which double as the home of Octopussy (played by Maud Adams) and Monsoon Palace (Kamal Khan's residence).
