Oprah Winfrey regularly ranks amongst the most powerful women in the world, but the acclaimed talk-show host says success doesn’t teach you as much as failure. Confessing to having experienced symptoms associated with a nervous breakdown last year, Oprah says she hit rock bottom when viewership for her television network started to spiral downwards. In May 2012, the channel’s losses were estimated at a whopping $330 million. “After 25 years of being number one, I had become accustomed to success. I didn’t expect failure and I had to dig deep,” are Oprah’s candid words. “Failure is a great teacher. I know this intellectually, but it is another thing if you’re living it.” Not one to take any loss lying down, Oprah revived the network with a show of her own: Oprah’s Next Chapter. With her network back in the news for all the right reasons, Oprah’s tried-and-tested mantra for success is simple. There’s simply no substitute for hard work.
