Over the years, Poonam Dhillon has been known for many things. From her debut with a Yash Chopra film at all of 16, she went on to star in almost 90 movies — before gracefully bowing out of the rat race. Since then, she has been lauded for her occasional theatre appearances and even for the élan with which she wears a sari! Yet, Poonam’s most impressive achievements aren’t widely publicised and both deserve considerable credit. Those in the know will tell you that despite upheavals in her personal life, the actress has played the part of mum to her two kids — Anmol and Paloma — with amazing dedication. She has also championed the cause of those less fortunate than herself with commendable commitment.
Only yesterday, Poonam hosted a high-tea in aid of the families of Maharashtra’s needy farmers, under the aegis of her NGO, titled Maddad – The Helping Hand. Rounding up a roomful of influential society ladies, Poonam had Asha Bhonsle do the honours while handing over a significant sum of money to the widows of famers from the Vidarbha region. While guests including Kintu Bajaj, Rajyalakshmi Rao, Kiran Datwani, Reshma Merchant, Rouble Nagi and Mona Narang made donations, others perused racks of designer garments and accessories that had been donated for the cause by Manoviraj Khosla and the like. Blue Sea in Worli served as the venue, the team at Adapt Studios supported Maddad by making a short film on the cause, and even the rain gods contributed their bit by keeping the skies mostly clear in Mumbai until the evening wound down.
Personally ushering the Vidarbha widows from the venue to their waiting vehicle while A-list guests waited to bid her goodbye, Poonam made her signature style apparent — this wasn’t an event designed for publicity, it was purely an event with heart. A signature moment worthy of our admiration…
