Anita Dongre & a ‘Sari’ State of Political Affairs
While the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears prance around in itty-bitty stage costumes by funky designer duo Falguni and Shane Peacock, power ladies from the higher echelons of the political world opt for more conservative offerings. Cherie Blair (wife of the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair)has dazzled in more than one exotic Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla ensemble. ‘The boys’ also find favour with Dame Judi Dench, but before we digress, here’s more from the diplomatic corps.
Only yesterday, Mumbai-based fashion designer Anita Dongre informed us of her latest political coup: for the Asian Women of Achievement Awards in London, held as recently as June 4, Miriam Clegg was spotted wearing an Anita Dongre sari. For those who aren’t familiar with UK’s political WAGs, Miriam is the raven-haired and ravishing wife of Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
Of course it was a night when several saris shone bright — Cherie Blair, who was also in attendance, made her mark in a fetching pink lace sari, while Dame Kelly Homes wore a blue sari (fairly similar in colour to Miriam’s outfit). Not in a sari, but looking like a million bucks, was the former wife of an Indian business man… better known for being an actress of some standing. We won’t leave you guessing: the sartorial star of the night (in a one-shoulder gown) was no-longer-Mrs. Nayar, Elizabeth Hurley!
