Most press photographers spend their entire careers interacting with celebrities from behind a lens and, often, only from across the red carpet. While writers and editors are frequently welcomed to ‘participate’ in events, photographers aren’t always made to feel like guests. That is why we find this little story warms the cockles of our hearts.
Last week, as Anupam Kher turned another year older, he celebrated his big day by staging a new play. Titled ‘Mera Woh Matlab Nahin Tha’, Mr. Kher had Neena Gupta as his co-star and a massive, appreciative audience in attendance as Mumbai bustled along on Saturday night. The city’s scribes arrived in droves, alongside famous faces including David Dhawan, Shatrughan Sinha and Simi Garewal. As guests were ushered into the auditorium, a handful of press photographers waited patiently outside for the evening to end. They had banked and uploaded their images for the night, but it was for an audience with Anupam Kher that they waited.
When Mr. Kher finally exited the venue, they asked him to pose with them for a photograph — as their keepsake to mark the night. He did, of course, and with a smile, but our tale doesn’t end with this proverbial Kodak moment.
So touched was Anupam Kher by the warmth extended to him by these photojournalists, that his office extended an invitation to each of them to attend his next show as the actor’s personal guests. The signature of a gentleman and of genuine geniality — no wonder Mr. Kher has so many fans!
