In a clash of two sides battling to keep their chances alive to qualify for play-offs in IPL 6, Delhi Daredevils emerged victorious against Pune Warriors India at Raipur's first IPL match at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium. Put in to bat first, riding on David Warner's quick-fire 51, Delhi posted a seemingly above par 164 on board. Pune Warriors India began the chase well and by end of the 17th over, looked set to overhaul Delhi's target with hard hitting Yuvraj Singh and Luke Wright in the middle.
However, Umesh Yadav's 18th over of the innings dealt a death blow to Pune's chances and almost confirmed Delhi's victory. The first delivery followed Luke Wright and cramped him for space. The next missile homed in on the stumps’ base at full pace and Wright barely managed to dig it out. The third left Wright befuddled as he failed to read the change in pace and the slower one was lobbed by him straight to the fielder at long-off for an easy catch. Umesh Yadav was in complete control as the batsman failed to read his variations.
A valiant effort by Warner at the boundary and Yuvraj’s sluggishness earned Pune only 2 runs off the next ball. Showing a much mature head on his young shoulders, Yadav bowled a slower short ball which beat Yuvraj's premeditated pull shot. The final ball was an encore of the previous one, only much faster, and Yuvi was beaten for sheer pace as the ball took his top edge and the catch was easily taken by Rohrer at deep square leg.
Umesh Yadav had dismissed two set batsmen capable of running away with the match and conceded only 2 runs from the over. The importance of the wickets couldn’t be overstated here, given the fact that both Yuvraj and Wright are proven match-winners for their side. The match had turned on its head and Delhi eventually registered a comfortable 15-run win over Pune Warriors India.
