The times, they are a-changin’ when it comes to bars and pubs around the country. Regular restaurants and bars are now a passé; what consumers are focusing heavily on is creativity that will enhance their experience. And having said that, a number of bars have earned themselves loyal customers with their one-of-a-kind concepts that are enthralling and are forever stretching the limits of our imaginations.
From an array of distinct bars and restaurants that have been upping their game lately, Mumbai’s Toast & Tonic emerged as the clear winner of the title of India’s Best Concept Bar at the prestigious annual nightlife and bar industry convention held in Mumbai last week in association with Johnnie Walker the Journey. It was up against renowned bars from other cities including Shisha - Bar Stock Exchange (Kolkata), Zero40 Brewing (Hyderabad), The Permit Room (Bangalore), Prankster (NCR), Shisha Jazz Café (Pune), Taverna (Goa) and Radio Room (Chennai).
Manu Chandra and Chetan Rampal’s (of Monkey Bar and The Fatty Bao fame) Toast and Tonic is highly recommended for all gin and tonic lovers in the Maximum City. Tucked into BKC, its interiors have a cosy and chic vibe to it, alongside an old country barn feel and it is usually described as a “New York East Village-style” restaurant.
The food menu is crafted making use of local ingredients and regional produce with a lot of Japanese, French, Italian and Asian influence and you can gorge on the Carne Asada Tostada (marinated, diced buff from Chittoor, coriander, jalapeno and avocado) and the spicy Naga chilli wings.
There’s something about their fizzing house-made tonics which are infused with fruits that sets it apart from other bars. Of course, gin drinkers usually delight at the thought of a bar solely dedicated to their favourite concoction and the owners ensure they fulfill all their customers’ wishes by making their own, in-house, tonic water, housed in the flagship restaurant in the city of Bangalore. They also have flavoured tonics including spicy, fruity, floral, herb-infused and the like which are usually paired with six different brands of gin. We recommend you try the East India Company (a concoction of gin, strawberry, clove tonic water and strawberry spiced ice), which becomes more and flavorful as the ice (with the herbs) melts.
