The Humming Tree Theatre : My Diego, My Art (Celebrating Frida Kahlo's Birthday)
This intense love story weaves art, adulation, infidelity, bisexuality, courage, loneliness and most importantly, utter lust for life. All this and more embodied the life of one of the most luminous painters of the 20th century – Frida Kahlo. Her obsessive love for the revolutionary painter, Diego Rivera feeds into her art. Or is it the other way around? ‘My Diego, My Art’ is Theatre Mi Amor’s no-holds-barred take on Frida Kahlo’s lust for life, her uncompromising honesty in art and her effrontery towards a life-threatening accident while mocking even death, like a true-blue Mexican. From being a style icon with native Mexican couture, to celebrating her bisexuality in a conservative society, her quirky inventiveness explores it all. This solo performance that reeks of undaunted optimism, unfolding with dollops of Hispanic music, dance and poetry straight from her personal diary, is a tribute to Frida Kahlo, on her 109th birth anniversary.
