Why Should You Park Your New Year Party At Park Street
If it is New Year’s Eve, you just got to go to Park Street! Company of your closest friends, roaming out in the streets, biting down some finger licking delicacies along with your favourite drink, perhaps a peg of McDowell's No.1.
This happens to be the common sentiment of every Kolkatan and you simply have to see it to believe in this often repeated phrase that rules the heart of Kolkata dwellers.
Why wait till dusk, start your day by hopping into a metro train carrying the local populace to their destination. Jump out at Park Street only to be accosted with peddlers hawking their fares that are as varied as the faces themselves. Sure, you have no need for the magazines, fruits or candies but what about the lovely handmade cards for New Year? Catch an old man clad in an equally worn out suit play the violin or revel in the husky voice of the teenage boy who has just started singing Jingle Bells in the sunny wintry afternoon.
Time to move ahead though! Walk straight into the heart of the street, stopping every now and then to watch the delighted crowd enjoying the day simply by window shopping. Wow! There’s Flury’s, the oldest tea room and confectioners in the city boasting of a long and illustrious heritage of 87 years. The pink and white building is all decked up and you are welcome to try out the yummy cakes and pastries that simply melt in your mouth.
Wait! Peter Cat, the old and trusted restaurant is just along the corner and you are rightfully tempted to enter its hallowed interiors on this very special day. Alas! There a long queue right in front of it though and you have no other option but to join it because every other eatery on this famed street has serpentine queues as well. No worries! The wait is well worth the delicious gourmet lunch and you would have to agree that no modern restaurant can do justice to a full Continental fare replete with a slice of New Year’s pudding as this fabled one.
Late afternoon gives way to a delightful evening with foggy skies and a welcome nip in the air. The lights come on in Park Street as it turns into fairyland a la Cinderella. Night Clubs get ready to greet the hordes of impatient revelers and there is a constant hum on the street as excited voices call out in wonder. Even the traffic policeman on duty is not immune to the charms of Park Street on New Year’s Eve and keeps smiling at everyone who crosses his path. A rare sight indeed!
Tantra at ‘The Park’ is soon packed where everyone wants to shake a leg, never mind the steep rates of entry and the expensive drinks being served. It is New Year that comes once in 365 days and mundane thoughts like prices must be kept at bay. Such is the charm of Kolkata’s Park Street!
The night unfolds slowly without causing any decrease in tempo of its beat. Late comers who are disappointed at not finding a place to dine and celebrate at the Park Street move on to the Kenilworth Hotel and the adjoining areas of Camac Street.
Party Animals, why not add a flavour of Park Street, Kolkata & welcome 2015 with your Yaars, and perhaps a smooth sip of McDowell's No.1.
The Party goes on and on and on only interrupted by strains of Happy New Year from time to time.
