It is that time of the year when everything is merry, the winter is kicking in, and everyone is gearing up for the party season. It is also that time of the season, when every woman is in distress about- ‘What to wear?
However, this year worry not, taking cue from our ‘Bollywood Divas’ we guide you through some absolutely stunning looks, which will help you be the ‘Star’ of the evening at these parties and social gatherings.
1) Waltz In A Skirt
Be it full skirts, tube skirts, pleated skirts, maxi skirts, or skorts - Skirts are the hottest thing for the party season this year. “Pencil skirts are the most popular among Bollywood belles,” says fashion stylist Heena. She adds, “You can make a sparkling entry at a party by pairing a simple pencil skirt with a shimmer crop top or sequined tee. Add a dash of red lipstick, and finish the look with a pair of stilettos.” One can also take cue from Neha Dhupia who looked drop-dead gorgeous in a long black skirt and a sensual white crop top. If you fancy a pencil skirt, do get inspired by Bollywood’s fashion icon Priyanka Chopra, who has elegantly flaunted her slender figure in fitted pencil skirts on more than one occasion. “Deepika Padukone’s all-white ensemble, accessorized with a chunky neckpiece can easily pass off as your simple yet elegant look for the evening,” advises Heena.
Star tip: “Skirts are ideal for all occasion, but never pair a short skirt with knee-length boots. In my opinion it’s a faux pas…and definitely not happening” – Deepika Padukone.
2) The Classic Sheath Babe
Nothing can flatter your svelte figure better than a sheath dress, and most B-town babes swear by it. “Either printed or laced, beaded or bright colored with an interesting statement piece as worn by fashion queen Sonam Kapoor – Sheath dress is your best bet this party season,” says Heena. You can accessorize a sleek sheath dress with a chunky metal belt too, just like our beloved Kareena Kapoor and show up for the evening with élan. If accessories are not your thing, then go for a simple lace design sans the bauble in a bright color or opt for a graceful white sheath dress like Sonam’s and finish the look with pointed pumps.
Star tip: “Fit is the key, if you want to sport a sheath dress. Ensure that you get a sheath that does justice to your curves” – Soha Ali Khan.
3) Go Androgynous
So you are not a dress person… Worry not, there are plenty of alternatives that will make heads turn the minute you enter the soirée. Go androgynous – it is the perfect look for those who are uncomfortable in a party dress. What ’s more… it is trending among the Bollywood hotties too. To carry this tricky trend with panache, you can take tips from the likes of Anushka Sharma who sported an interesting yellow suit recently and fashionista Deepika Padukone who donned ivory again but added a zing to her look with a bright jacket. “The key to get this look right is to go for tailored, cigarette-style trousers and pair them with pointed courts and a sparkly top to add to the festive bling,” proposes Heena.
Star tip: “Aim for androgynous-sexy— wear your blazer with a buttoned up shirt and rolled up sleeves. Now throw on some relaxed trousers and brogues” – Sonam Kapoor.
4) Sparkle In Style
Party season is the perfect excuse to go all out there and sport a shimmering sequined number or a metallic dress. Whether it is a short dress or long, the shimmer definitely helps you to shine throughout the evening. “Spice it up with slick red lipstick and avoid chunky jewelry,” Henna recommends. Take a cue from fashion savvy Deepika, she kept her sequin dress simple and exhibited her classy charm.
Star tip: “Don’t go to heavy on the jewelry just wear a pair of solitaire earrings to complete the look ” – Sonakshi Sinha.
5) Wear It Long
A floor-sweeping maxi in a vibrant shade is just the thing you need for a sleek evening look. Take inspiration from Kalki Koechlin who chose a red maxi dress to rock her night at a swanky bar. “A strapless maxi dress paired with diamond earrings is the simplest way to keep it subtle yet glamorous. And, yes if you have that well-toned legs, don’t hesitate to show them off just like Anushka Sharma, who sizzled in a royal blue maxi dress with a slit that ran high,” says Heena. She adds, “Keep in mind that certain maxi dresses do not flatter certain body shapes, so you would have to pick one that suits your frame and style it accordingly.”
6) The Sexy See –through
See – through outfits are topping the fashion charts. Sheer clothing undoubtedly defines bold, sexy and glamorous. “However watch out how much you reveal. There is a thin line that can make a sheer outfit go from class to crass,” warns Heena, adding, “The key to hit it off with sheer is – layering. Translucent jackets, coats and overskirts can add an interesting dimension to the layered looks.” A stunning see-through blouse is a great way to make a simple skirt, trousers or jeans look party-ready, just like the sensational Sushmita Sen.
Star tip: “You need to balance the natural sexiness of sheer fabrics with soft, feminine details and, if required, conservative touches. So if you are wearing a sheer shirt, wear it buttoned to the collar and under a well-fitted jacket. Also try sheers with a busy print that distracts attention and keeps from giving too much away” – Sonam Kapoor.
7) Add The Length
Yes, you have seen all the Bollywood beauties adorn them and they are totally the in thing. Palazzos are a great way to look instantly taller and slender. Cause of its versatility palazzos make it to the top of any party wear list. “Wear it with a classic crop top, or pair it with blazers or glam it up with a sequined top or keep the look relaxed, comfortable yet very chic just like gorgeous Chitrangada Singh who paired her palazzo pants with a gangi and spiced it up by adding a beautiful neckpiece,” says Heena. A simple and comfortable black palazzo pants can be paired with any of your favorite tops and voila, you are ready for the party.
8) Pretty In Black
Well, if none of the above appeals to you, simply grab your beloved LBD. One can never go wrong with the classic ‘Little Black Dress’, it is sleek and effortlessly sexy. It is even Ms Piggy Chops fashion mantra - “If you are ever in doubt go for black…you can never go wrong with black.” True that, a voguish LBD work wonders and can help you turn into the belle of the ball. Be it Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukerji… the B-town babes just cannot resist the lure of a LBD. Available in various cuts and designs, it is not difficult to find your perfect LBD. “But ensure that it’s not too long or too short,” says Heena. “You can add a bit of pizzazz by throwing in a gold jacket over your shoulders like Katrina Kaif or by wearing bright hued high-heels,” suggests Heena. One can also opt for a little flared look with knee length boots like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Star tip: “The best way to enhance your LBD is to wear it with a stunning pearls necklace” – Kangana Ranaut.
Lastly, do not be afraid to take risks, make your style statements with confidence, and just enjoy the festivities.
