Winter is the season of flus and chills. The one where you want to snuggle up in your favourite blanket with some Netflix and a hot drink.
A couple of drops of spirit topped with boiling water, a spoonful of honey, a slice of citrus and a bit of spice, make this drink warm, cozy and comforting.

The word toddy comes from the toddy drink in India, produced by fermenting the sap of the Tari palm trees. The story goes that the drink originated in 17th-century India, where British colonists raved about drinking the delicious fermented sap. They took it with them across the ocean to the southern plantations of the American colonies, where it was adapted to use locally produced rum and cane sugar.
Other tales claim that the hot toddy comes from Scottish tradition where the drink was made with whisky, hot water, honey, and spices such as nutmeg or clove. However, a few other sources also credit an Irish-born physician Robert Bentley Todd for his prescription of a hot drink of brandy, white cinnamon, sugar syrup, and water.
According to research warm liquids can be soothing, lemon water with honey can ‘loosen congestion and help prevent dehydration.'
The honey coats and soothes the throat and it is believed that its sweet taste triggers nerve endings to treat persistent coughs while the steam and lemon help open the sinuses.
Here’s our favourite recipe for a classic hot toddy:
50ml Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve whisky
75ml boiling water
25ml lemon juice
1 lemon wedge
1 cinnamon stick
Step 01: Place a bar spoon with runny honey in a latte glass and add the hot water.
Step 02: Add the lemon juice and stir.
Step 03: Add the Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Scotch whisky and stir once more.
Step 04: Garnish with a clove-studded lemon wedge and a cinnamon stick.
