Five years after the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL), Bollywood has been an inseparable part of it. Either through their association with the game as proud owners of a team or by their mere presence in the VIP boxes – B'town stars have always added glamour to this much-celebrated annual T20 tournament. While the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, Preity Zinta, and Shilpa Shetty have their own IPL franchises, there are a bunch of others who are equally passionate about the game. Here are seven IPL enthusiasts from Bollywood who are ardently known to be following the game.
Bollywood’s nawab who hosted the opening ceremony of the Indian Premier League season 8 this year at the Salt Lake stadium, Kolkata, is a huge fan of the IPL. If sources are to be believed, Saif Ali Khan often hosts parties for his friends during the IPL season and enjoys the game with some nawabi food at his palatial house. Needless to say, his begum – Kareena Kapoor Khan too is an ardent lover of the game. Apparently, Saif is very fond of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) captain – Virat Kohli, however, he is supporting last year’s winning team – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) too. Currently, Saif is busy with his next project Phantom, but that doesn’t deter him from enjoying the matches. The LIVE match on television in his vanity van is his saving grace. And while he is on the sets, you would constantly hear him ask ‘What’s the score?’
With his next film titled – M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, it does not come as a surprise that Sushant Singh Rajput is rooting for Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK), this IPL season. While Sushant is on a small break post the release of his latest suspense thriller – Detective Bymokesh Bakshy, he is ensuring that he isn’t missing a single match. The blooming actor is a cricket fanatic and has even played the game professionally on the district level. “Sushant loves cricket! Be it ODIs or Indian Premier League, whenever a match is being played, it’s difficult to get his attention to do anything else,” says a source close to Sushant. “Now that he has started work on his next film - Ms. Dhoni: The Untold Story, he is eating, sleeping, breathing cricket,” adds the source.
When you are dating the captain of one of the strongest team of IPL, you definitely can’t escape the frenzy around the game. The NH10 actress is cheering for Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are playing under the supreme captain-ship of her beau – Virat Kohli. Allegedly, Anushka has planned the promotional activities of her forthcoming film – Bombay Velvet, as per RCB’s schedule in the game. So, don’t be surprised to see the feisty gal encouraging the team to hit fours and sixes at every game in the stadium. And please, save her from the flak that she received during World Cup 2015 this time, the star batsman’s lady deserves a lot more accolade for her enthusiasm for the game.
The versatile actor/director/singer who regaled the crowd in Kolkata with his performance during the opening ceremony of the 'India Ka Tyohaar – IPL season 8', is equally enthusiastic about the game. And though he is extremely fond of his dear friend Shah Rukh Khan’s team – KKR, he is rooting for his home team – Mumbai Indians. “I'm from Mumbai, so obviously I'm going to support Mumbai Indians. I'm excited to see Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) on field again,” said Farhan. He adds further, “IPL is thoroughly entertaining and I follow all matches closely.” Not many know, but Farhan is quite superstitious too when it comes to cricket. Supposedly, if someone hits a four, while he is sitting in a particular position, you will find Farhan sit in the same position throughout the match. His friends even say that he uses weird jargon and phrases to cheer for the team he is supporting like – Sweety Sweety Beauty Beauty, Koyal Ki Pihu etc and once he knows his chants are working, he keeps chanting those phrases throughout the match, much to his friends’ annoyance.
Like Farhan, Abhishek too is an ardent fan of Mumbai Indians and shows similar quirks when the match is on. Apparently, even Jr.Bachchan is very particular about where he sits and in what position he sits, while watching the team play. He has this one favourite chair, which he places right in front of his television when he is watching the match. “I'm superstitious when it comes to cricket. It comes from my dad,” says Abhishek. Though Abhishek is pretty close to SRK, he passionately supports Mumbai Indians. He once even wore a Mumbai Indians jersey and went to SRK’s party after King Khan’s KKR lost a game to MI. Abhishek loves the Mumbai Indians jersey and gets a new one every year, which he proudly puts on during every game. Unfortunately, this year Abhishek is busy shooting for his Hera Pheri 3 in Dubai and can’t catch the game live. However, he is constantly checking for updates online.
The megastar of Bollywood who has recently been conferred with the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award is an ardent cricket lover and thoroughly enjoys the IPL games. Especially because he feels that the IPL games are quick and entertaining. However, he is extremely superstitious when it comes to cricket and never sees a match live. He is absolutely convinced that if he watches a match live, the team he is supporting is sure to lose, but that does not stop him from getting updates about the ongoing match from everyone around. Like his son, he too passionately supports Mumbai Indians every year.
The voluptuous girl who stole many hearts with her performance in the recently released Dum Laga ke Haisha is a huge fan of the Indian Premier League and supports Mumbai Indians. The actress always makes it a point to hit the stadium whenever her team is playing to cheer for her favourite captain – Rohit Sharma. And if she happens to miss a single match due to her work schedule, the actress is known to drive her friends mad with her constant demand for updates.
