Dance music and electronica is quickly becoming a way of life in India. It has grown huge in the underground, spreading throughout the night clubs. It’s even penetrating the mainstream; a place where traditional Bollywood rules. Nowhere is this more obvious than Kolkata. The Kolkata underground scene is throbbing and pumping with deep beats and bass sounds.
Some of the country’s best DJs reside here, in East India. As the former capital of India, the city has a rich cultural heritage, and that seeps into modern-day music. But, who are the DJs pulling Kolkata into the modern world? Who’s bringing big beats and electro synths to the underground clubs of India? In this post, we’re looking at the top ten Kolkata DJs.
1. DJ Suprana
Suprana is a model-turned-DJ, and one of the finest in India. She grew up in a very musical family, so her stars were aligned with music from an early age. Both her mother and grandmother were established Bollywood singers, and that talent certainly hasn’t skipped a generation! She started DJing in Italy, before moving back to Kolkata, and setting the underground scene on fire. After a promising start to her career, she is beginning to look towards the international festival circuit.
2. DJ DITS
DITS is a true purist when it comes to DJing. His record collection spans a generation, and he has an encyclopaedic knowledge of music. This depth of musical knowledge ensures he knows exactly how to work a crowd, and choose the perfect set of tunes. As for his live shows, DITS is somewhat unique in the underground scene. He uses live instrumentation alongside the decks to create live remixes on the fly. His mix of Punjabi, Bhangra, and commercial dance makes him a firm favourite in the clubs.

DJ Richard, or Radio Mirchi when on the radio, is a veteran of Indian dance music. Making his start in 1999, he is one of the founding fathers of Indian club culture. 4. DJ JMR
JMR’s obsession with music started when he spun his first records back in 2009. From there, it was only a short step into the studio, and he started producing original music in 2011. He has since then established a production house that has spawned a variety of club hits. When it comes to music, JMR doesn’t restrict himself to one particular genre. Dipping his toes in electronica, commercial house, and rock electronic, he is both versatile and prolific.
5. DJ Soumyadip
There is a strong formula that works time and again in Indian dance culture. The mixing of traditional Bollywood sounds with big beats and electronics. It’s this formula that Soumyadip works to his advantage. He got his break by producing a variety of Bollywood remixes, the established route to fame for any Indian DJ! Since then, he has toured eastern India, and won accolades for his remixing ability. Soumyadip is just at the start of his career, and we expect big things!

This trio of talented producers and DJs have made a strong name for themselves in Kolkata. Their goal is to fuse electronic and progressive sounds with tribal and club flavours.
