Just like its name suggests, the simple syrup is the simplest of ingredients in a cocktail recipe.
But, while it may be simple to make, the syrup can elevate a cocktail to its flavourful best. Whether you’re mixing up refreshing pitchers for summer, or fixing a batch of frozen cocktails for a weekend brunch, this sugar syrup can make them richer, and better!
It’s ready in minutes, can be stored for months, used in cooking and baking, and even dissolves instantaneously; let’s get to know more about this handy ingredient!

What Is Simple Syrup?
Simply put, the syrup is sugar and water boiled together. Mainly used as an alternative to granulated sugar, it works well with drinks as the sugar is already dissolved in it. The most common ratio for the recipe is 1 part water and 1 part sugar. Translucent and smooth, it can be used on its own or combined with any of your favourite ingredients. Simple, isn’t it?

The Effortless Variations
Depending upon the thickness or density of the sugar ratio, the syrup may have multiple uses.
The thin simple syrup has a ratio of 3 parts of water to 1 part sugar and is used to glaze cookies or cakes, while the medium variation has a ratio of 2 parts of water to 1 part of sugar. This recipe is used to sweeten beverages like coffee and iced tea. The rich simple syrup, or the basic one is the one that bartenders prefer using in their cocktail mixes

The Uncomplicated Infusions
As mentioned earlier, the syrup when combined with other flavourings, makes for an exciting ingredient. Use herbs, spices, or even fruits to create your own creative syrups. For starters, you can add citrus zest, whole cloves, star anise, cinnamon, mint leaves, and even fresh ginger once the water and sugar are done boiling and removed off the stove.
