The New Year is almost upon us and as we go forward with gusto, we look back at the bright lights who made 2015 memorable. From Amitabh Bachchan to Salman Khan, LIVEINSTYLE.COM lists five celebrities who rocked 2015 for a host of reasons — social, financial and even personal.

As an incredible year deserves an amazing send-off, these are our top picks for stars who should bring in the New Year with a great big bash…

Deepika Padukone: For beating the odds

With ‘Tamasha’ in theatres now and the impending release of ‘Bajirao Mastani,’ this leggy lass has had a busy year. Still, she makes our top list not for breaking the box office, but for putting 2015 to good use from a social point of view. On New Year’s Day 2015, Deepika decided to tell the world about her troubles; a tale best recounted in her own words: “So on New Year’s Day 2015, I decided to take my struggle with anxiety and depression to the world with the hope that this would encourage others like me to break through the stigma, come out and seek help. Six months later with the help of Anna Chandy, Dr. Shyam Bhat, Anirban Blah, Nina Nair and Aashu Calapa, we set up The Live Love Laugh Foundation,” says the star. For bringing an oft-hidden subject like depression out into the open and reducing the stigma around mental health, Deepika scores big in our books.

Priyanka Chopra: For conquering the West

In 2000, she conquered the world symbolically with a beauty pageant title, but Priyanka’s plan for world domination didn’t stop there. In 2013, the actress made it clear that she had her sights set on Hollywood — becoming the first Guess Girl of Indian descent, recording a duet with Pitbull and lending her voice to a lead role in Disney’s animated movie ‘Planes’. Her foray into music (and, indeed, into the West) was met with some scepticism, but 2015 proved you just can’t keep PC down! The tenacious, talented star made her American TV series debut with FBI drama ‘Quantico’ in September 2015 and has since earned accolades as one of the fall TV season’s hottest new stars. No doubt 2016 will bring bigger and brighter things for this shining star — and that certainly merits a celebration.

Shahid Kapoor: For being the year’s ‘buzz’ boy

From being better known as ‘Kareena’s boyfriend’ to establishing himself as a star in his own right, Shahid Kapoor has come a long way — and this year the attractive actor has travelled a full circle. Out of the blue came news of his nuptials and, by July, Shahid had swept blushing bride Mira Rajput off her feet and into his beach-facing Mumbai home. Of course it isn’t his marriage itself that cements his place on this list, but the unexpected quantum of interest it generated that has us directing a spotlight on the nimble star. With over 7 million Twitter followers and 14,902,216 ‘likes’ on Facebook (as on date), Shahid proved to be the year’s breakout social media star. That, coupled with the reams of newsprint he hogged in his avatar as dapper groom and ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded’ judge, made Shahid a force to be reckoned with this year. Of course he has already spent much of the year in celebrations, but we still suggest a massive New Year bash to toast a terrific 2015.

Amitabh Bachchan: For raking in the big bucks

There are literally a million reasons why legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan should win praise for playing his part in 2015, but our focus is on one reason alone — and it is valued at about $33.5 million! This year, for the first time ever, ‘Forbes’ included stars outside the U.S. on their rankings list of the World’s Highest-Paid Actors, with Mr. Bachchan making his mark at No. 7. Others who made it to the Top 10 include Salman Khan and ‘khiladi’ Akshay Kumar. At 73, the ‘Sholay’ star earns more than Hollywood actors Chris Pratt and Ben Affleck combined. Just another reason for associating the amazing Mr. Bachchan with the word ‘crorepati’!

Salman Khan: For conquering a year of ups and downs

Sharing Mr. Bachchan’s No. 7 spot on the ‘Forbes’ list was just one of the milestones in the meandering journey that was 2015 for Salman Khan. Both ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ proved his dominance over movie-goers everywhere for the umpteenth time, but the year was notable for Salman’s court appearances and a string of controversial headlines as well. We won’t sit in judgement on the über-popular star, but we do applaud him for surviving a turbulent year and coming out on top as the curtain falls on 2015!
