She has long been regarded as a path-breaking Bollywood actress and right this minute, Shabana Azmi is giving us lessons in life too. Jet-setting across continents to attend a film festival in Chicago (for a special preview screening of her new movie Signature Move), Shabana then performed Girish Karnad’s Broken Images to a packed theatre in Toronto, before delivering a lecture at McMaster University in Ontario. If that sounds like an achievement, consider that she did it all within a week, between late September and early October!
Having earned a well-deserved vacay (let’s call it a late birthday getaway, since her big day was September 18), the spirited Shabana then bandied together a bunch of her besties and set off on a real adventure! Now you know we are big fans of the pause (as is Twinkle Khanna) and take our vacays seriously, but Shabana and her girl gang are giving us vacation goals. We hear they set off from Tuscany in Italy on a drive down to the Amalfi Coast, stopping as they went at places of historic interest. From a winery in Chianti, they headed to Pompeii and Positano; also pausing in Florence for a bit more fun.
Unwinding with her friends didn’t stop the actress from uploading some of the action for her social media followers and it was in Florence that Shabana shared a picture of a wok full of upma (that looked like poha and has started a hilarious debate on what she really meant) her crew had cooked up for breakfast. We care not a whit what it was, concerning ourselves more with the bigger picture — six 60-plus Indian women cooking up breakfast in Florence and a storm in Italy, while romancing the pause in the most amazing way possible. From queuing up for pizza in Naples to swimming in the Mediterranean, Shabana and her besties are doing it all. You could call it their ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ road trip (a name inspired by her stepdaughter Zoya Akhtar’s film), but these fabulous, feisty friends are calling it their ‘Baap Re Baap’ trip instead. And where did that name come from? Well, we hear that when the legendary star’s travel agent learnt that the average age of the ladies on the trip was 60, he apparently exclaimed, “Baap re baap!” and the phrase stuck.
The ability to take it lightly, laugh a lot and carry a load of everything along (from insect repellent to an assortment of desi snacks), makes these amazing women our unwind inspiration for the future. Long may they celebrate the good life!
