Secret Superstar Review: 5 Reasons To Watch This Aamir Khan & Zaira Wasim Starrer!

October 20, 2017 Bold Articles

Unlike most of his films, Aamir Khan’s festive release this year – Secret Superstar, featuring his Dangal daughter Zaira Wasim is anything but perfect. However, the simple tale of a young girl, who dares to dream, plays bold and listens to her heart, will surely touch a chord, make you smile, bring those warm fuzzies and make you want to chase your dreams; and this is exactly what you need to add to your festive mood.

Produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao under the banner name of Aamir Khan Productions, and directed by Advait Chandan, Secret Superstar is the story of Insia Malik (Zaira Wasim) who is not very excellent at her academics but is a gifted musician and aspires to become a singer.

However, all odds are against her. Insia hails from a conservative family in Vadodara, where her father, a wife-beater, has put several restrictions on her. Her loving mother (Meher Vij) is supportive of her dream but, of course, can’t cross the restricted boundaries set by the regressive patriarch of the house. Amid such limitations, how Insia believes in her herself, plays bold and follows her heart to become a burkha-wearing YouTube sensation, who is then sought by the cheesy and successful music director Shakti Kumaarr forms the crux of the story.

Well, if this gist still hasn’t convinced you to hit the cinema halls, here’s are five more solid reasons why you shouldn’t miss Secret Superstar…

1. The Little Star Of The Film - Zaira Wasim

The film features one of the biggest stars of Bollywood – Aamir Khan, but the star of the film is undoubtedly this little firecracker, Zaira Wasim, who makes and impact in each scene that she appears. The young actress, who played the younger version of Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan’s Dangal last year, gives yet another power-packed performance in Secret Superstar. Zaira completely owns her character’s play bold attitude and makes an impression on one and all. She is a gifted actor and a star in making.

2. The Beautiful Mother-Daughter Bond

Subdued in the presence of the patriarch of the house, Insia and her mother transform as soon as he leaves for work and their playful friendly relationship is absolutely adorbs. Both Insia and her mother hope that the man of the house gets a job in Saudi Arabia, so that he stays away for 11 months at a stretch and they have to only deal with him for a month when he returns home during the Ramzan period. Some scenes between then are way too cute and worth every penny spent on the ticket. And even though Insia often mocks her mom and calls her stupid, the two share a great relationship and the conversations between the two are delightful. To add to the experience, performance by Meher Vij is superb.

3. The Issues It Touches Upon

On the surface, Secret Superstar may come across as a film about dreams and aspirations but the writer-director – Advait Chandan also boldly touches upon the issue of domestic violence, which even today is predominant in most households and yet remains to be one topic that is often shoved under the carpet.

4. The Fantastic Music

A film about an aspiring singer has to have some great music to actually make an impact. Secret Superstar without a doubt makes an impact with its music. Kudos to Amit Trivedi for a fantastic album, which starts with Main Kaun Hoon and other soulful numbers like I Miss You and also includes a foot-tapping Sexy Baliye.  The songs are well-placed with the situations in the film.

5. The Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, Of Course

Aamir Khan plays a boorish music director in the film and his cartoonish act brings oodles of laughs. Taking inspiration from the likes of Jeetendra and Anil Kapoor, Aamir makes certain that we don’t ever forget his role of the cheesy Shakti Kumaarr.

Final Verdict: Secret Superstar is sure to add some sparkle to your festive mood, go watch it with friends and family now.
