What Milind Soman decided to do before hitting 50, Pippa Middleton picked at 32. It seems the new way to mark a milestone is by accepting a royal challenge — and what better way to do that than by competing in an endurance race. For Mumbai man Milind, Ironman Switzerland posed his challenge of choice, while the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister opted for the ÖTILLÖ swimming and running event in Stockholm, Sweden, this week.
Delaying her September 6 birthday celebrations to take on the challenging 50-mile route across 26 of the archipelago’s 1,000 islands, Pippa chose brother James Middleton, old friend Jöns Bartholdson and ex-boyfriend James Matthews as her teammates for the race on Monday. Finishing in 13 hours, four minutes and 24 seconds, Pippa and her crew ran wearing wetsuits and were not allowed to remove their trainers for the swimming sections — all of which apparently involved a dip in the “notoriously chilly” Baltic Sea.
Of course, Pippa’s love of the water must have helped significantly; what with her holidays mostly involving brilliant bikinis and blue seas. All covered up in her race gear for ÖTILLÖ, Pippa still has the world salivating over pictures from her late-August sojourn in St.Barts. If the washboard stomach on display then wasn’t testament enough to her fitness regime, overcoming ÖTILLÖ certainly is!
