From her love for Indian ensembles by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla to her brilliance in Notes on a Scandal, Shakespeare in Love or even as M in the Bond films, we adore Judi Dench for a million reasons. Now we’re elated to have discovered one more. At 81, the veteran actress has acquired her first tattoo — proving, beyond question, that you are never too old to try something new.
An inking that is entirely in line with her amazing spirit, the Oscar-winning actress has had the Latin saying ‘Carpe Diem’ etched on her wrist. It means ‘seize the day’ and it is a motto Dench believes in wholeheartedly.
If there was ever any doubt, now there is none at all: Dench is game for life in a way that is inspirational to us. Despite her advanced age, she refuses to slow down with regard to work commitments, she abhors the word ‘retirement’ and even though her eyes aren’t quite what they used to be (she has macular degeneration that requires monthly treatment), she won’t allow herself to be “beaten” by medical problems.
But back to the tattoo that has inspired this tale. After first considering an Indian symbol that represents life and love, Dench settled on the popular Latin phrase. “My daughter Finty gave it to me for my 81st birthday,” says Dench, explaining the ink she acquired in December. As gifts go, it’s a wonderful idea, don’t you think?
