They say the true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good. If this is true, Bono, Calvin Harris and (unexpectedly) even Charlie Sheen are due honourable mention.
Mikey Goldsworthy, now the bassist for British band Years & Years, recalls a time when he worked as a waiter at an upmarket London restaurant and served a number of famous folk — including U2 frontman Bono. Goldsworthy confesses the diner’s celebrity patrons all tipped at varying rates, but Bono and Chris Martin were memorable for their generosity. While refusing to put a number on it, Goldsworthy says, “Bono was very generous,” adding that “Chris Martin tipped in concert tickets.”
Goldsworthy’s tales encouraged us to scour past reports to identify other generous celebrities and we were pleased to find a fair few of them. We hear DJ Calvin Harris once tipped the captain and crew of a yacht a staggering $1,000 after only six hours on board; and Kim Kardashian once left a $300 tip at a restaurant where her bill itself was under $200! Now, while his ex-wives struggle to take what they can off Charlie Sheen, the actor reportedly left a $1,400 tip on a $629 restaurant bill in recognition of the wait staff’s impeccable service not too long ago. Rounding off the numbers on Hollywood’s best tippers are Bill Murray, Dan Akyrod, Drew Barrymore and Johnny Depp. It’s not a bad signature — to be known not just for good work but also for great generosity.
