There’s no better way to unfake it than to speak from the heart. Adele aced a sincere apology after being forced to cancel her August 17 stage show in Arizona, on account of ill health. The ‘Hello’ singer, who is rarely seen without her signature liquid eyeliner, posted a video message to fans with no makeup on — stripping away the façade and giving admirers an honest view of her real self.
Saying how “really, really sorry” she is for calling off the show, Adele added: “I’ve pushed through a lot of things, but I’ve been trying to sing all morning and warming up and nothing’s happening… Cancelling shows has not been something I want to do… It’s the last thing I want, but I have to look after myself because I’ve got so many more shows to do.”
Making no attempt to cover her red eyes or patchy skin, Adele’s apology video has been called “as soul-baring as any of her songs.” It comes as no surprise then that the message racked up 10.3 million views within three days.
With the cancelled show having already been rescheduled for November 21 at the same venue, most fans have responded to Adele with empathy. There’s no doubt the unfake video helped those affected by the cancellation to view Adele as a real person with real issues, rather than just as a performer who owed them bang for their buck at the box office.
