Just when you thought you've become a Scotch perfectionist, someone swooped in and spilled their expertise all over you.
Hence, a lot of myths arise out of these 'out-of-the-blue' tips and suggestions. Debunking these myths is a must as there are a number of misconceptions surfaced about Scotch Whisky. It’s important that you separate the myths from the facts to enjoy the finest of all elixirs in a perfect way:
1. Myth: That’s the way!
Reality: How does one drink alcohol is a personal choice. Always remember, there is no “right” or “wrong” way to drink Scotch Whisky.
2. Myth: Neat or ‘not’ so neat?
Reality: It’s not necessary to have Scotch Whisky only neat or with an ice cube. It's a myth and one needs to move away from. Rather, try different combination such as tonic, cola, soda, spring water, mixer, on the rocks, neat or even with coconut water and enjoy the drink.
3. Myth: Old Whisky is the finest of all.
Reality: Old is not always gold. As many might believe but older whiskies are not always the best ones. Like other beverages, there is a limit to how long a spirit can age. If kept for too long, the original spirit is dominated by flavors coming from the wood.
4. Myth: The darker the Whisky the older it is.
Reality: Colour does not validate the age of a whisky. Generally, the colour of whisky is influenced by the number of times the cask has been used.
5. Myth: Single Malt is better than Blended.
Reality: Single malt and blend are quite different. Single Malt Whisky anticipates blended Scotch Whisky. However, these early malt whiskies are incompatible and variable in quality.
They each have loyal followers but are quite different.
6. Myth: The best comes from Scotland.
Reality: Only Scotch comes from Scotland. Scotch Whisky is unique as it is rich in diversity of flavour in comparison to any other category of whiskey.
