They look like royals, act like royals and all week long, they show us a royally good time. But for the cast of TV’s hugely popular ‘Downton Abbey', it was entirely another kind of royal who had the set aflutter on March 12. ‘Real’ royal, Duchess Kate, visited Ealing Studios in West London last week, where several of the show’s ‘downstairs’ scenes are shot. It seems Princess Kate’s visit was part of an initiative to celebrate British arts and culture and it followed a trip to the Tate Contemporary Gallery only a day before.
Whatever the reason of course, the Duchess of Cambridge stirred up excitement amongst ‘Downton’ fans worldwide, spending much of her time with characters Daisy and Mrs. Patmore in the kitchen. Eight months pregnant, looking gorgeous and wearing high-heeled black pumps, Kate left the ‘Downton kitchen’ bearing gifts — Lesley Nicol and Sophie McShera (that’s Patmore and Daisy) presented the Duchess with a chocolate cake, complete with a crown-topped Downton emblem printed on the frosting. Then the show’s little George, actor Oliver Barker, gifted a toy train to Britain’s Prince George via mum Kate, and the exchange was heart-warming.
The show, that is currently filming its sixth season, has been a favourite with Kate and Prince William, who once confided their Downton “addiction” to former cast-member Jessica Brown Findlay (who played Sybil Crawley). And so it seems the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge do care about the fictional goings-on in the home of Lord and Lady Grantham!
