With the publishing of ‘The 2015 Sunday Times Rich List’, news comes in that the Hinduja Brothers are no longer Britain’s richest — having been beaten to the post by Warner Music owner Len Blavatnik. With a staggering £13.17 billion to his name, Blavatnik finds himself in the top spot for the first time. Of course, one can be rest assured that Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja aren’t shedding any tears, having finished on second spot. They may have lost their premium slot but they have actually added billions to their fortune since topping this list last year.
Many others of Indian origin also make it to the list, including Biocon’s Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, mining magnate Anil Agarwal, pharma giants Bhikhu and Vijay Patel, industrialist Gautam Thapar and Tops Group global chairman Diwan Rahul Nanda.
While Shaw must be pleased to have cemented her place on this list for the first time, steel baron Lakshmi Mittal has lesser reasons to be happy about. He has fallen four places from Rank 3 in 2014, with his fortunes apparently plummeting by over £1 billion in just one year. However, still worth an impressive £9.2 billion, Mittal beats the Queen herself by several billions. While he stands firm at Rank 7, the Queen — who topped the first rich list in 1989 — is ranked 302.
