It is game, set and a perfect match for Andy Murray. Reps for the former Wimbledon champion and current World No. 6 have just confirmed that the tennis ace and his long-time girlfriend Kim Sears got engaged last Wednesday. The Scot is known to be notoriously shy when it comes to discussing his personal life, and we hear the couple had hoped to keep their engagement secret for some time, having informed only their closest friends and family.
On Twitter, even until yesterday, Andy was content to discuss his trip to the Philippines for Asia’s International Premier Tennis League and also Lewis Hamilton’s Grand Prix win — failing to give his 2.79 million followers any hint as to the change in his relationship status. But the cat is out of the bag now and confirmations come in concurrently with more news from Team Murray.
Yesterday, Murray reps also announced the ending of two of Andy’s longest and strongest partnerships in tennis: assistant coach Dani Vallverdu and strength/conditioning coach Jez Green have both parted company with the World No. 6. News of Vallverdu’s departure comes as quite a surprise to those in the know, considering his closeness to Murray since their teenage years. “Friendship with Murray is not a continuing guarantee of employment,” one British sports correspondent was prompted to say, shortly after the announcement.
But let’s dwell instead on Murray’s new partnership. After a nine-year courtship, Andy and Kim have finally sealed the deal with a diamond ring that the tennis champ painstakingly chose himself. Blue-eyed beauty Kim, now 26, was only 17 when she met Andy at the US Open in 2005. Since then, Murray has credited much of his success to her unwavering support over the years. And so, it seems, after years of volleying about, the score on this one is ‘love all’… and Andy should be quite happy with that!
