If you haven’t heard of Soo-Joo Park, now is the time to get acquainted. She stands tall at over 5'8" without her steep stilettos, but that isn’t the reason why fashion fanatics and wannabe models around the world are currently obsessed with this Korean runway model. Having walked the ramp for everyone from Armani and Fendi to Oscar de la Renta, we knew this young star was on the rise when brands like Chanel and Tom Ford started to snap her up for their advertising campaigns.
Now, moving from ultra-high-end to a tad more mainstream, the Asian-American model has been unveiled as the new international spokesperson for L'Oréal Paris — alongside other celebrities including our very own Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Freida Pinto and Sonam Kapoor. Considering the L'Oréal roster also features the likes of Dame Helen Mirren, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Watts, Hugh Laurie and Ryan Reynolds, Soo-Joo Park certainly finds herself in the company of lofty legends.
On her own steam, however, Soo-Joo is interesting enough. These days she’s almost nonchalant about ‘Vogue’ cover shoots and walking for Karl Lagerfeld — having had more than a fair share of exposure to both. Her name means ‘precious gem’ in Mandarin and her story is pretty precious: born in South Korea, her family moved to America when she was 10. She was studying architecture and working as a graphic designer when she was ‘discovered’ in a thrift store in San Francisco, while shopping for vintage clothes. She was 21 (at a time when the average rookie model is in her teens)!
In a few short years, Soo-Joo has become a familiar name in the hallowed halls of über luxe fashion houses across the world. Still, she is grounded, loves “hard-core lounging” (which basically means seriously doing nothing at all) and credits her meteoric rise to the support of well-wishers… and her choice of hair colour! Whatever else you will hear about Soo-Joo Park as she continues on this trajectory (with L'Oréal now in her kitty), know this: the naturally dark-haired stunner truly believes that blondes have more fun!
