World Cup 2014 – The Biggest Blockbuster on the Planet!
It's show-time in Rio and playmakers from across the world have begun showcasing their talent on the biggest stage on the planet. With half of humanity watching it, there is no blockbuster bigger than the Football World Cup. And it has its fair share of thrill, drama, action, comedy and of course, romance!
If you are following the World Cup, then you must have seen some brilliant method acting by the strikers in the opposition's 'D'. Their comedic timing is at its best as they quickly take the cue from the defenders and fall down clutching their faces as if their colon has exploded. So what if the rest of the world throws popcorn in disgust, if you earn a penalty – your country gives you an Oscar!
Now, watching these players in action is nothing short of watching a movie and everybody has their own genre:
SuperHero Film: The Dynamic Dutch duo of Van Persie and Robben is like the combination of SuperMan and Flash! While one executes flying headers with aplomb, the other’s speed flummoxes everyone. The only problem with this Justice League is that everyone attacks and no one really defends. Batman seems to be missing in action!
Drama: Rona Dhona… Well, Indians love drama. Be it serials or movies, we love mellow-drama. And no one else does drama like Ronaldo. Especially, when he is playing for Portugal. With little support from others, he acts like tragedy king Dilip Kumar. Win or Lose, he doesn’t need glycerin to shed a tear.
Disaster: If you are following the World Cup, then you would agree that Spain’s journey seems to be directed by Roland Emmerich. A perfect disaster film, with loads of “WTF” moments. I mean, could you believe Iker Casillas fumbling like that? Seems so reel, I mean unreal. No?
Short Film: These are the little gems that go into your heart swiftly. You don’t need to see 90 mins of action to understand their caliber. Exactly like Messi’s magic. He might not be in the heat of things throughout, but one swift run changes everything and leaves everyone watching stunned.
Animated Film: If over the top expressions was your dope, then nothing beats Suarez. He is so animated on the field that it becomes difficult to understand whether he is actually hurt or crying wolf! But like most good animated films, he does pack a wallop.
Art Film: Watching Andrea Pirlo on the field is like watching a Master Class from David Lynch. Every element is woven to perfection, perplexing the opposition and then delivering the sucker punch with panache. If you had to imagine a background score to his footwork, then it would have to be a classical violin piece.
The show has just about reached its interval, with many teams already packing their bags, but the second half promises to be a thriller! Big heroes like Spain, England are already on their way back and side kicks like Costa Rica and Columbia are stealing the show. With so many surprises, this is one of the most unpredictable World Cups in a long time. Something, Hitchcock would be really proud of!
