Trying Times for Emraan Hashmi

Some years ago, when we met Emraan Hashmi and his charming wife Parveen for their first-ever interview together, they were still debating having a baby. “Marriage is a landmark in anyone’s life, but then suddenly, when you have a kid, everything changes. There is a completely different dimension... you have to be responsible for another person in the house. Until you are mentally prepared to take on that level of responsibility, it’s not fair to the baby,” Emraan said to us at the time. Now, with news that his four-year-old son Ayaan has a malignant tumour in the kidney, Emraan’s words echo into the current. Both parents have played their part with total dedication since Ayaan’s February 2010 birth, and this tragedy appears to have taken them totally by surprise. With barely enough time to even question the dreaded diagnosis, Emraan and Parveen rushed Ayaan into surgery and, on January 15, word came through that the operation itself had been successful. The road to recovery will be a painful one too, but children have an amazing ability to bounce back — even from something as insidious as cancer. And for a boy who will have the unstinting support of loved ones and the prayers of a nation behind him, this too shall pass.
