Rahul Bose and ‘The Idea of India’

Previous Next

On February 22, Rahul Bose hosted a charity event that had the country’s glitterati abuzz. ‘The Idea of India’ he called it — and indeed it was an idea that received acceptance, encouragement and applause as the likes of Javed Akhtar, Abhinav Bindra, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Zakir Hussain and Amartya Sen stepped forward to donate iconic memorabilia in support of Rahul’s NGO (The Foundation). With Vikram Seth, Leander Paes, Aamir Khan, Zubin Mehta and others adding further muscle to the list of 16 legendary Indians who offered everything from handwritten sonnets to an autographed baton for auction, the evening proved to be as much of a talking point as it was a shot in the arm for the cause of children’s education in India’s furthest outposts.

While Mallika Advani conducted the auction (taking every bidder through each lot with a special story narrated by Rahul), it was Javed Akhtar’s bid for RK Laxman’s drawings of ‘The Common Man’ that created the greatest stir — Akhtar himself being one of the generous sponsors of memorabilia for the evening. And with Gautam Singhania, Ronnie Screwvala and wife Zarina Mehta, Atul Kasbekar, Nandita Das, Sangeeta Jindal, Harsh Goenka and Queenie Singh amongst the invitees, this charitable event proved that glamour and giving make great bedfellows!
