Nigella Lawson: In the doghouse

They say every dog has its day and celebrity chef Nigella Lawson has certainly been short of good ones in the recent past. Taking the metaphor literally, however, we hear Lawson’s latest fight with her millionaire ex-husband Charles Saatchi is over a stuffed dog! Don’t brush this off as bunkum — while a stuffed toy it may be, Nigella and Charles’ pretend pooch was bought at an auction for £10,000 and it, apparently, took pride of place in the kitchen of the former couple’s £15 million home.

Named ‘Narles’ (a combination of the couple’s first names), the artificial mutt was claimed by Saatchi following his split from Lawson in June. “The stuffed dog was one of the only things they bought that was loved by them both,” says a former employee of the famous foodie, who also claims that 70-year-old Saatchi banned all members of staff from touching the dog in case they damaged its glossy fur. “We ignored Charles and put hats on Narles. We once balanced the pet turtle of Mimi (Nigella’s daughter Cosima) on the dog’s head. It was a weird thing to have in the house,” says another former staffer.

With Nigella now under investigation by a specialist team of Metropolitan Police for her use of Class A drug cocaine, her fake Fido’s fur hardly merits top priority. But then some people have pets and others have pet peeves!
