Move over Robert Downey Jr. — our mantastic Milind Soman may not have bagged a role in an Avengers film, but he’s the real Ironman! Last weekend, on July 19 to be precise, Mumbai’s buff and beautiful model woke up in the wee hours, to participate in what is said to be the world’s toughest triathlon.
Set in the heart of one of Europe’s most beautiful countries, Ironman Switzerland showcases Zurich’s picturesque lake and countryside, while pushing athletes to the limit. The triathlon includes a 3.8-km swim, a 180.2-km cycle ride and 42.2-km run that must all be completed within 16 hours for participants to win the coveted ‘Ironman’ title. Though the top 5 contenders completed the course in less than 9 hours, our man Milind did us proud by achieving a division rank of 138 in the 50 to 54 years category. Clocking 15 hours and 19 minutes, Milind was one of only two Indians to participate in this category.
No mean feat by any standard, Milind has worked tirelessly to attain the ‘Ironman’ tag and has chronicled his ‘#Journey2IronMan’ with regular updates on social media. His training officially began on April 14 and is captured for posterity in posts and images on his Facebook and Twitter pages.
“He wanted to mark his fiftieth year by achieving something special and this certainly fits the bill,” says an insider. Pushing his personal boundaries, the self-confessed “tree lover and running person” has always been an inspiration for fitness enthusiasts across the country, but now he has really embraced a royal challenge with this triathlon victory. While all of seven Indian nationals participated this year, we’re convinced Milind’s achievement will motivate many others to try their hand at the Zurich course in years to come.
