We were dismayed to hear that People magazine is shutting shop in India with immediate effect, along with another Outlook Group title: Marie Claire. As the death knell rings louder for lifestyle magazines, insiders have begun to list all the things that have gone wrong with the business in recent years. One irritated editor recounts an on-going interaction with a relatively unsuccessful actress, who is demanding a make-up artiste for an editorial shoot at a fee of Rs. 45,000 for the day’s assignment. Add to that a phenomenal photographer’s fee, pricey production costs and staff payments to spot-boys and drivers who do precious little as their celebrity employers pose prettily for pictures. With advertisers paying next to nothing per page and overheads mounting, it is just impossible for anyone to balance their books. Especially when the likes of Mallika Sherawat decide it’s okay to invite friends to a set for lunch while the magazine crew loses light and lands up footing a five-figure bill to boot!
