Honouring the li’l girl’s daddy
Exactly a year after his death, now a road is named after actor Priyanka Chopra’s late father as Lt Col Ashok Chopra Marg in Andheri which leads to the apartment building in which the Bollywood and former Miss World lives. The inauguration was held on Tuesday morning by Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray. Also seen at the inaugural event were Mrs Madhu Chopra, Priyanka’s brother Siddharth Chopra, cousin Parineeti Chopra along with their extended family members who greeted one and all at the event.
Priyanka’s father, who was a doctor with the Indian army, died of cancer at the age of 64. During her speech at the event, the 31-year-old actress said, "Many people ask is this road being named after Dr Ashok Chopra because he is Priyanka Chopra's father. No. I am here because I am Dr Ashok Chopra's daughter.” Disproving criticism that the honour for her father is built on her superstar status, she further said, "My father worked tirelessly and quietly with many communities."
Shiv Sena Chief UdhavThackeray who was the guest of honour at the event added, "When I first got the invite I thought you are inviting me just because he is Priyanka Chopra's father. But then I was surprised when I came to know the amount of work he has done."
Buzz is that Priyanka Chopra's family and her residential society members had approached the local councillor to have the road named for her father. The required clearances were given by the corporation which is controlled by Udhav Thackeray's party.
