As India battled it out with South Africa in Melbourne, almost the entire country sat glued to their TV sets on a Sunday morning some weeks ago. Such was the audience for the World Cup game—both at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and in aamchi Mumbai—that the roads were shockingly traffic-free and busy brunch hubs actually had tables available! Of course the first family of film in India proved that their love for food trumps all other forms of entertainment and so it was that the Kapoor clan descended on Mamagoto in Bandra for some delicious Asian à la carte fare.
It would be safe to assume that the Kapoor men chose cricket over crispy chilli potatoes, because the table comprised only women—from the perfectly-coiffed Krishna Raj Kapoor and her daughter Reema Jain, to Shammi Kapoor’s wife Neela Devi. While the veterans were accompanied by natty nurses, it was nimble Neetu Kapoor who arrived before the others to make sure their table was set to perfection. Mamagoto’s suburban hub did not disappoint (their wait-staff was attentive and the food was fantastic), but the afternoon’s best feature was the tangible display of ‘asli yaari’ across generations of Kapoor women. Over tempura and som tam salad, the mood was bright, the conversation was dynamic and the clan shone for its camaraderie.
