Edge of Tomorrow – Cruise Control!
Tweview: Liman takes the #GroundHogDay formula & creates a crackerjack loopy sci-fi film that entertains, & shows that Tom Cruise still has it!
Yet again, human kind is under attack. Aliens called Mimics want to take over the world and are at war with humanity. Tom Cruise ( Major William Cage), is a spokesman for the U.S. military, but is forcibly drafted for battle duty. The United Defense Forces have planned to attack the Mimics in Europe and WIN a decisive war. But when they attack, the Mimics are ready and foil the attempt almost immediately. Cruise, who is not a soldier, dies too but manages to kill an Alpha Mimic before he dies. This fortuitous event creates a time loop and resets the day every time Cruise dies. So he starts living the day again and again, until he manages to defeat the enemy. Complicated? Don’t ask. Watch.
This movie is a no-nonsense entertainer. The story is fun, the screenplay is excellent and the production value is impressive. Director Liman seems in total control of the genre and mixes humour with action beautifully. And of course, Tom Cruise is at his expressive best. His transition from a hapless soldier to the one that leads the charge is brilliant, and his comic timing is perfect. Emily Blunt acts as a perfect foil and is chalk to Cruise’s cheese!
The Popcorn Worthiness:
Built to entertain the masses this summer, it is the perfect family popcorn fare. Kids will love the visual effects and grownups will love the humour. Even though the film takes the usual dramatic route in the end and kinda loses some steam, overall it's a fun ride. Also, it is less than 2 hours long, hence doesn’t bore you at all. Overall, this film is cracker-jack entertainment, without any pretenses of being a sci-fi classic. No deep physics or logic involved. So strap on for the ride and switch on to Cruise Control today.
