Wednesday night is generally a slow one, so if you didn’t head to Summer House Café in New Delhi’s Hauz Khas Village last night, we wouldn’t blame you. If you woke up this morning and slapped yourself for not going, we’d understand that too. After all, it was ONLY THE COOLEST NIGHT EVER: with Coldplay’s Chris Martin getting up to do an impromptu set, while Pentagram’s Vishal Dadlani, actress Freida Pinto, Raghu Dixit, Tanmay Bhat and the blokes from AIB cheered him on.
“Holy wow!” said Dadlani, “Life is such a crazy beautiful place!” singing along, as Chris rocked the house. Delhi’s mid-week party people could never have imagined this and certainly could never have hoped for more — getting the kind of treat usually reserved for the world’s VVIPs. It was practically a private show and so they screamed and applauded and sang along (some even cried), eliciting more than a few genuine smiles from the legendary Coldplay frontman.
For those who came in late, Chris was in the country to support the Global Poverty Project and had no gigs scheduled (or you’d have heard it from us). Over dinner with Vishal and Freida, the British singer just decided to go “play somewhere” and that’s how he ended up at Summer House, where he sang ‘Fix You’, ‘Viva la Vida’ and (our favourite) ‘Paradise’.
It was a night no one present will ever forget — about as unfake and amazing as it gets. So much so that amongst the millions of Indian Coldplay fans who woke up regretful this morning, were the voices of Sonakshi Sinha, Mika Singh and Karsh Kale; with the actress penning a thought everyone who missed it will agree with wholeheartedly: “SO jealousss.”
