While the world just can’t get enough, our favourite Sherlock Holmes ever has just confessed to hating the selfie! The actor — who recently announced his engagement to British theatre director Sophie Hunter — says he won’t be taking any photos of himself and his bride on their wedding day. “What a tragic waste of engagement. Enjoy the moment,” Benedict Cumberbatch added emphatically, saying, “Do something more worthwhile with your time, anything. Stare out the window and think about life.”
Of course his rather harsh criticism of the selfie is a tad ironic, considering Cumberbatch has posted selfies while promoting his ‘Hobbit’ movies and also posed in ‘ussies’ (that’s a group selfie, for those who haven’t heard the term yet) with filmmaker Peter Jackson and ‘Sherlock’ co-star Martin Freeman. Still, Cumberbatch’s current complaints are more than just a few idle words for effect. The 38-year-old actor has actually banned social media because he hates having his every move scrutinised. “I find it hard enough in my day-to-day life to give myself a context that’s private or removed from constant observation… We’re all paparazzi now. I have no appetite for it. I can’t relate to the need to expose people,” he says. He wants it to be known that any accounts in his name are fakes and, no matter what people think he should say or do, he prefers the simple life. “I’m a homebody. I love to stay in at night, light a fire, have a whiskey and watch a movie or read a good book.” Hold that thought. We’ll drink to it!
