A quote-post on Shahid Kapoor’s Instagram page just kicked off a flashback. “Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are,” reads the quote, alongside a picture of the legendary Kurt Cobain, to whom the line is credited. Man of the moment, Shahid is certainly unique and wears his individuality with pride.
Today he’s an award-winning actor and a recently-married man, but back in the day when he used to date Kareena Kapoor (and she was the more famous of the two), Shahid wore his pride like armour. Bright and early one morning, gearing up for a shoot with Sasha, I sat down to pen some notes and finalise questions for our post-shoot interview. After enjoying a hard day’s work surrounded by beautiful bikes, cars and car parts (at the Mumbai workshop of DC Designs), Shahid glanced over our notes. Creatures of habit, we had listed his full name and the date up top. He hadn’t even looked at our fairly controversial questions (the end of his relationship with Kareena was being hotly debated at the time) and already he had a complaint. “Why does everyone spell my name as ‘Kapur’?” he moaned. “Just because some other people spell ‘Kapoor’ with an ‘o’ does that mean I can’t?”
“A rose by any other name…” we shot back, but made a permanent mental note on the subject. Typos may keep you humble, but the spelling of a person’s name is no matter of private judgment!
