A ‘signature’ moment with Mohammad Azharuddin

There’s a film in the works about his life that is hogging reams of newsprint at the moment, but ace Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin isn’t letting this recent round of media attention go to his head. He’s been up and down and up again and his rollercoaster innings appears to have kept him particularly well grounded.

Earlier this month, LIVEINSTYLE.COM bumped into Mohammad Azharuddin at the JW Marriott in Mumbai and couldn’t help notice how warmly the former Indian captain he greeted everyone; from the parking attendant to the doorman. We were exiting the plush suburban hotel with actress Poonam Dhillon as Azhar was walking in and — having greeted the hotel staff like one would long-lost friends — the cricketer stopped to greet our actress friend as well. But while the staff had received hearty thumps on the back and even hugs, “Poonamji” was greeted with a graceful Namaste.

Now we know people associate Azhar with all kinds of things — from his Arjuna Award and his political career, to his marriage to Sangeeta Bijlani and those notorious match-fixing allegations — but we’d like to remember this display of humility as his signature. Emraan Hashmi, who plays Azhar in director Tony D’Souza’s biopic, should take note!
