A lunch meeting with Waheeda Rehman & Asha Parekh: This is the asli yaari of legend!
Overcome by a sudden craving for oriental food, we called chef and restaurateur Farrokh Khambata on Tuesday, to ask if a table at Joss would be available at short notice. “Shouldn’t be too busy, being early in the week,” he responded, but made a reservation for us nonetheless. Salivating and super-hungry, we arrived at the suburban outpost of this amazing Pan-Asian restaurant shortly thereafter, expecting a slow lunch service. It speaks volumes in favour of Farrokh’s food that the Mumbai eatery was packed to the gills with immaculately dressed ladies-who-lunch and sharp-suited CEO-types. But there was one table in particular that caught our eye.
Amidst the cookie-cutter pretty young things, sat two elegant veterans who outshone them all — Asha Parekh and Waheeda Rehman. With her perfectly coiffed silver hair, Waheeda looked radiant and spoke fondly to her friend Asha; as steaming dim sum arrived at their table. Even from across the room, you could tell that both actresses have been fast friends for decades, such is their camaraderie. Indeed, theirs is a fabled friendship — the asli yaari of legend. From attending events and film screenings, to taking a Scandinavian cruise together, these iconic actresses have done it all.
“We’ve been friends since the Sixties,” Ashaji has confirmed in the past, adding: “We try to meet up as much as possible. It isn’t easy, considering the pace of life today. But relationships are like plants. You have to nurture them, or they wither away.” If their encounter at Joss is anything to go by, this friendship is a sheltering tree with deep roots — undaunted by time and impervious to damage.
