Fashion Dos For The Derby This Season

Gents, the Derby is here. Time to wear your smartest pair of pants. Why?

It is one of those rare occasions where men can dress as flamboyantly as women. It’s time to let your inner peacock shine. Regardless of the stand you are placed in, you must put on your finest clothes and strut in style. Sounds too intimidating? Well, the point is to encourage. So, if you still haven’t figured out your A-game when it comes to Derby dressing yet, fret not! We are here to your rescue with a derby fashion guide book.

The Hats: The Derby is famous for money, horse and hats. Hence, a hat is somewhat of a must. If you intend to wear a suit, then a fedora is good to go. If you plan to flaunt a semi-formal look, a straw hat can help your case. But remember to steer clear of caps. Baseball caps and the like are not entertained at the Derby. Leave them behind.

The Suit: Derby is the best place to flaunt your latest suit acquisition.  Pinstripes, plaids, plain or patterned are ideal. Pick any to flaunt with a crisp shirt. While narrowing your shirt options, remember, they cannot be too dressy. Classic cuts work the best. If you are looking to experiment with casual/semi-casual attire, a jacket is still a must-have. Jackets with contrasting lapels, elbow patches, contrast detailing and mismatched pockets are always a good idea.

The Ensemble: Crisp shirts, polo and turtle neck T-shirts, V-neck T-shirts can be teamed with jeans, formal trousers, chinos and formal knee-length shorts. A jacket is a must-have, layer it. Can you embrace bold prints, colours and patterns? Definitely yes! But remember the rule, never to have more than two prints and patterns at any given time.

Accessories: Ties, bow ties, pocket squares, cufflinks, sunglasses, man purse, dickeys, suspenders, belts, monotone socks, pocket watches and your nerd glasses are all invited to Derby. Of course, don’t wear it all at once. Mix and match these accessories depending on your look.

Shoes: Shoes are always an important aspect of any look; they can make or break an outfit. At the Derby however, they are everything. You cannot sport the wrong kind of shoes. Unless you know how to wear your pristine white sneakers with a suit pant, stay clear of casual shoes. Loafers, Oxfords, and leather lace-ups are Derby essentials, and clean socks go without saying.
