Show review: Adam Saaks
No holds barred!
‘Master Shredder’ Adam Saaks was one of the most hotly anticipated designers at Signature International Fashion Weekend 2013 — even more so because his fittings and rehearsals were all hush-hush. Knowing that Saaks would present curvaceous women in slinky bandage dresses (that had all been nipped and tucked by this modern-day Scissorhands) was enough to get temperatures soaring even before the show. When Saaks’ sea of black — interrupted by a scarlet here and a royal purple there — engulfed the ramp, there were whispered catcalls and discreet whistles at his artistry. More than once, we found ourselves whispering, “How on Earth is that holding up?” Tanks, camisoles and tights held together by a string — often literally — showcased his tremendous mastery over his art. His trump card, of course, was a live demo on actress Sarah-Jane Dias! Her arms crossed above her head, Sarah giggled as Saaks snipped the front and back of her snug dress to create a modish pattern below the bust, running back across the waist. Then, with tweezers, his deft fingers pulled one loop into another and — lo and behold — a masterpiece was made!
