Prominent fashion designer and writer, Wendell Rodricks on what Priyanka Chopra gets absolutely right and where there’s room for improvement exclusively for Cine Blitz!
Priyanka Chopra on the red carpet at the Big Star Awards 2012 is utterly, exquisitely flawless. Why is she not at Cannes yet?! The dazzling red gown, the glam trail, the statuesque poise, the perfect hair swept to one side, the ideal clutch... this look gets the crown deserving of an ex Miss World.
On any other person a black gown with gold chain mail running riot like bondage fetish would look a disaster. But Priyanka pulls it off. Put it down to a figure made for gowns and a classic pose honed to an art. The public have seen this lissome girl go from Miss India to Miss World to celluloid success. Along the way Priyanka began a tryst with fashion, quite literally in a movie of the same name and the numerous glossies that shine on a magazine rack. Her face and fashion sense have now become an expected part of her persona.
Between a minimalist white will-power jumpsuit style ensemble to a pale neutral safariesque mini, she now skates on thin ice. It seems obvious that the star favours peep-toe shoes. But when the pale neutral is paired with a clunky black, the eye gets drawn floor-wards and shortens the silhouette. It is best to stay with a neutral tone or, in this case, go with a funky boot. The same mistake with a frilly mini and yellow top; the shoes mar the otherwise youthful image.
I love the choice of the black, front cross over, draped jumpsuit with the backless daring derriere. It is so fluid, easy and refined. Priyanka does it full justice!
It is best that Priyanka stays with a lean long form rather than shorter lengths. Both as a woman and now, in a sterling position as an actor, it is best to leave the casual girlie look for roles in cinema. Compared to the girlie teen look of a pair of jeans and enviable ab-revealing casual top, a stunning one- shouldered single sleeve turquoise cocktail mini or a glittering silver sheath (also in a demure mini length) work as they are both bordering on club to evening wear. A look that Priyanka shines in!
Also wining like a true star is Priyanka in desi-wear. A seductively sheer sari or a cocktail white kurta ensemble, are not only beautifully Indian in a festive way but naturally flawless in the choice of accessories, the bindis and the superbly done plait. Partly dishevelled, this hairdo can be well imagined on a ramp of an avant-garde designer like Dries Van Noten.
Suggestions for Priyanka Chopra? Use bright nail polish for feet on a holiday and especially on the beach. They tend to take the eye from face to toe in such a flash that a person appears shorter. It is sagest to stay with nude tones (not even French manicure) for toenails.
Opt for bright neon, metallics or pearlised fingernail colour for evening red carpet. Also trending for many seasons now, are the almost black nail colours from Chanel or one of the many high-end luxury brands. Dark fingernails in deep plum or purple black look fabulous with red carpet couture... even during the day.
It would be nice to see a more fluid, breezy, relaxed silhouette like a one-shoulder kaftan in a modern print, among the casual events that Priyanka attends. It will work better than a teen, girlie, casual look.
It is a given that the star will dazzle in a silver sheath gown that oozes Marilyn Monroe Hollywood sensuality. But what took my breath away is the perfect choice of gown for an MTV event. It all works magnificently together.
The poster-type print in vivacious modern colour. The sexy low back. The sleek rockstar hairdo... A perfect marriage of event, glamour and star quality.
One thing we can be sure of with Priyanka Chopra: that mega watt smile on that beautiful face can light up the darkest room and make the clothes fade into oblivion!
