Designer of the day - The ‘Cut’urier : Adam Saaks

Sexy, elegant and supremely fun, Adam Saaks brings his formidable scissors and a vibrant palette (from the Saaks signature black to a burst of colour), especially for his “Indian audience.” We speak to the man who creates magic and glamour out of humble tees, on his Signature International Fashion Week debut.

On his show stopping outfit

“It’s a surprise! I haven’t made it yet. I’ll just see Sarah-Jane (Dias), get inspired and create something on the spot!”

On the current fashion trend he’s had enough of

“High rise pants! When I’m cutting shirts, they reduce the amount of space for me to design on the body.”

On the vintage fashion trend he’d love to revive

“I’m pretty much in the moment all the time!”

On his biggest inspiration

“India! There is so much culture and people have such beautiful souls. The city I most enjoy is Goa. The place is magical. It helps me get away from everything and connect with myself. But the biggest inspiration for me right now is myself! I used to look outside myself for inspiration, but after years of ups and downs, I’ve discovered that I always pull myself through. This realisation — trust in self — has been the most powerful (inspiration) for me.”

His permanent muse

“Music!”

On the democracy of design

“I will cut on any human being, no matter who they are. It’s about the experience. Give me anyone — celebrity or not — and I’ll give them the Adam Saaks look in minutes.”

What he’d be if he wasn’t a designer

“A rock star, of course!”

On what he needs around him to design

“Other than music and hydration, all I need are sharp scissors, a girl and good lighting!”

On his celebrity clients

“Mel B is one of my latest subjects. She’s a good friend and we’ve been spending a lot of time together. I’ve designed her look for her new single Once in my Life. The shirts are amazing. I can’t wait for those images to be released!”

On showing his work in Mumbai

“I love Mumbai and am very excited to return! All Signature events are epic and I’m very happy to be part of one again. The last time I was here for the Signature Derby — it was just amazing!”

Words that come to mind when he thinks of India

“The best food and people!”

On his favourite Indian food

“I love tikka masala!”
