Designer of the day - The Maverick : Mark Fast

The Maverick : Mark Fast

Romantic and rebellious at the same time, Mark Fast’s desi debut has us holding our breaths. In advance of his opening show at Signature International Fashion Week tonight, we get him to spill the beans on his inspiration and style secrets…

On the collection he is showing at SIFW 2013

“Think the wild and fierce Eighties — an acid flashback. My Spring/Summer 2014 collection is a celebration of teen spirit, woven from memories of trance, dance and nightlong romance. My gothic-chic muse owns the night; she has partied till dawn and is inspired by the bright, blue morning sky reflected in a television screen. I’ve mixed neon elastomeric yarns with cotton and merino wool to create new colour combinations and textures, designed to mimic the washed out look of water colours. Think calm waves of water draped over the body contrasted with the fierceness of the sun!”

On his show stopping outfit

“It’s a floor length fringed dress, embodying elegance and freedom.”

On his showstopper, Sonam Kapoor

“I love Sonam; she is the most incredible woman with such elegance. She is absolutely gorgeous!”

On the current fashion trend he’s had enough of

“If I say I’ve had enough of something, it’ll most likely come back to haunt me! I don’t really focus on trends; just what looks and feels good for the body.”

On the vintage fashion trend he’d love to revive

“It’s a cycle; everything comes back to the now and becomes contemporary. I love the embroideries and beadwork from the 1920s. It’s so special. It’s amazing to see hand craftsmanship on garments.”

On his biggest inspiration

“I love Tilda Swinton! She is Hollywood mixed with fashion. The moment she wore my dress on the cover of Another magazine, it immediately highlighted the intensity I want to create in my work.”

His permanent muse

“A strong woman, who can express her true self. Confidence is beauty to me.”

On celebrities who epitomise his signature style

“Everyone is like a chameleon in my clothes. There is no one individual who can epitomise them. This makes it very exciting for me as a designer to see who brings what to my clothes.”

What he’d be if he wasn’t a designer

I would be in Hollywood, working on costume design. I also really wanted to be an actor. Maybe in a Bollywood film? That would be amazing!

On what he needs around him to design

“All I need is music, which keeps me excited and energised! Life to me is a catwalk. As I walk down the streets with my headphones on, everyone becomes a character to the music in my head. My work is all about that emotion, passion and love. If I can create like a musician makes music, I am happy!”

On his celebrity clients

“I work a lot with private clients for red carpet events. I’ve created tour outfits for Kylie Minogue, Chrysta Bell and Jessie J. It’s very exciting to create these one of a kind pieces.”

On showing his work in Mumbai

“I have never been to Mumbai. I’m so excited to show here and gain inspiration from the city and its people.”

Words that come to mind when he thinks of India

“Colour and love!”

On Bollywood

“I have watched many Bollywood films and my favourite music video so far is Chaiyya Chaiyya. Love it!”
