When work becomes all about play: Dhruv Davar
Events, experiences and Mumbai. These are Dhruv’s passions. And he’s managed to combine them to ensure that there’s no distinction between work and fun.
How to get a high
“When I stand at the console, there’s no place else in the whole world I want to be. When I’m running the show, it gives me the biggest high. Do it flawlessly, and it’s ecstasy!” There’s no denying the sort of thrill that his work gives Dhruv Davar. He is the founder of Inextis, an events and experiential on-ground marketing agency catering to the country’s top corporates.
His other thrills come from meeting the biggest people in the corporate world, going neck to neck with the best there is competing for business, working with celebs and working with brands across all segments. But the best feeling, he says, is that no matter what happens – you know it’s your decision, and that’s what makes it worth your while.
Work equals fun
Even as a kid Dhruv understood two things: sports and entertainment. “I started my life by playing professional cricket and sometimes like to boast that I’ve played with Virat Kohli, even if it was only in a couple of leagues matched and we were in different teams,” he says. An illness put paid to his cricketing ambitions and then, while he went on to do engineering Dhruv had a remarkable realization – that he couldn’t ‘work’ during the day and have ‘fun’ at night. He would have to find a way to have fun at work. And so the seeds of Inextis were sown.
Inspiration was easy, says Dhruv. Turning the idea into reality wasn’t. ‘It wasn’t just about starting Inextis, it was about doing that in Bombay,” says this Delhi boy. As a college-student he had gone to Mumbai and a friend had made him fall in love with the place. He told his friend he would come back and work there sometime.
City of dreams
He began working at an agency in Bombay but frustration soon set in and Dhruv was desperate to strike out on his own. That’s when he received a call from a well-wisher who promised to get him a pitch for a big event for a PSU. He was up against some of the best agencies in the country and bagged the project.
He had moved to Delhi for two months for the project, but the lure of Bombay was too strong. So, leaving home, first client, contacts and with no work in hand, he left for Bombay. “What can I say, I was in love,” he gushes.
Turning a passion into a pay check
The first sparks of Dhruv’s passion had begun to fly while he was still studying engineering and he freelanced and worked one events. After a stint with a top events company in Delhi he moved to Bombay. But there, he says, he couldn’t relate to the place or people. So, with no job in hand he left and managed to find one within days. That was another short stint, but then he joined another company and put in a year there. “Live with your decision against all the odds,” is a lesson he learnt then.
Another mantra he lives by is “An idea is a delusion without proper execution”. Dhruv says he didn’t start off with a great idea. “The motto was to stick to the basics and within three years Inextis has done some fabulous work, won pitches against the best, created an IP, is a part of Asia book of records and has a fabulous team who loves what they do,” he says with justifiable pride. “It’s never about just the idea – it’s about living with it every day, every second of their life. That’s what makes the difference."
