Sandhya Parthasarathy asked herself the question whether a corporate job was all there was to life. It led her on a path that made her happy and spreads joy around as well.
Money and monotony
Sandhya began her working life as a software developer in a top MNC and she loved every bit of it. “A job stands for security and stability,” she says. “But after a point, I realized that money doesn’t make you happy. I kept asking myself- Is this all that my life is going to be? Is the rest my life going to be so monotonous?” Those questions led to the awareness that she wasn’t really giving wings to her creativity.
Baking for fun
Meanwhile, Sandhya had also discovered that baking gave her a sense of accomplishment. ”As an IT employee, I was always looking for a break from the monotony and that’s how baking happened to me,” she says. At first it was just a hobby but soon became more than that. “After a long day at work I would come home to bake. Soon I was reconsidering what I actually want and where my heart lies,” says Sandhya.
The simple fact that she could make people smile with her baking made her want to pursue it even further. After several trials and being persuaded by friends and family, Sandhya decided to create her own little brand focusing on freshly baked cakes.
Turning a passion into a pay check
What started as a hobby has grown by leaps and bounds. Today Cake My Heart is a baking studio that takes customized cake orders and offers classes for baking enthusiasts.
Quitting her job to set up Cake My Heart wasn’t all that hard, says Sandhya. “Finding a passion and working relentlessly at it is the more difficult part.” Driven by her passion, Cake My Heart aims at giving every client the taste of freshly baked preservative-free cakes. Sandhya’s cakes are mostly eggless and she also specializes in Vegan and Gluten-free bakes. Sugar art, customized cakes and dessert table set ups are their other specialties.
The business comes with its own set of challenges. Given that she makes no compromises with the quality of ingredients Sandhya had to initially find ways to offer a cost-effective product to customers. “Over the years I’ve realized that only the best ingredients will give you the best results. The strategy is to make clients understand that our cakes stand for quality and are healthy, too,” she says.
Spreading sweetness and smiles
Seeing kids looking at a Cake My Heart creation with awe and adults refusing to believe that the thing standing in front is them is cake makes her job as a sugar artist thrilling and utterly fulfilling, says Sandhya.
“It has been such an enriching and rewarding journey,” says this passionate baker and confectioner. “Exploring my creative side which I didn’t even know existed has made this job as a cake decorator far more satisfying than my previous jobs. Every day has been a learning experience.” One of the things she’s learned is that you cannot compromise on quality and the rest will fall into place.
