Three Unforgettable Bold Moves of Virat's Career

1) ON BECOMING CAPTAIN, MID-WAY THROUGH A TOUR

The India-Australia tour 2014-15. W as there a lot running on in my head when I was handed over the test captaincy mid-way through the Australia tour? Yes, of course. Did I have second thoughts? Never. I love responsibility. It surely was hard to believe and a bit overwhelming at first, but never once did I think -I don't want this.

Sometimes, moments like this in sport leave you with a life altering perspective. It’s not always easy when the time comes for a bold move. But if you are fully convinced - and you will know when you are - you will not stop to think twice. You know you are doing the right thing - there are no manipulations involved, no repercussions and no disappointments either.

2) ON GOING IN FOR THE KILL, AT ADELAIDE

The Adelaide tour was indeed momentous. First time as test captain. Our team had fallen short by 48 runs after being set 348 for victory. Perhaps a draw was easier and guaranteed but I decided to go all out and play bold. It was the second innings. And I know this will sound ridiculous, but I had a vision the night before - that we have chased the total down, and that I would be around 170 not out. Well, we lost by 40 runs and I got out for 141. As a batsman, I was in a zone which is unexplainable. I felt like nothing could stop me today - it was a beautiful feeling.

I guess it all depends on how much we believe in ourselves. As humans, we all have equal opportunity to be bold and brace new challenges that are tossed our way. We’ve just got to detach ourselves from fear, and stop wondering what the world is going to think.

3) ON PLAYING IT BOLD, IN DELHI

Playing for Delhi, back in 2009, there is this instance that stands out distinctively in my mind. I was given captaincy and we had to win both the games to qualify - and win one - with a bonus point. We had dropped a couple of seniors and brought in youngsters to play the game. I wanted guys who would do what we want as a team, and not take anything lightly. I opened both the games, chasing totals in the fourth innings. Now that was something I had never done before. Eventually we qualified, winning one game by a bonus point, and the other one, by 9 wickets.

On field or off, I would say honesty and transparency are the two principles I live by, and that carries on to any walk of life. There are no regrets really, not on the professional front. Except perhaps in life, there’s just one - that my father isn't here today to experience the rewards of his vision and hard work, from my initial days as a budding cricketer.

ON WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A BOLD HERO

I would never imagine myself not speaking up. What you see is what you get. There is no living up to an image really. At the end of the day, if you believe in yourself, you never have to be pretentious. We are all here to share knowledge, open up and learn from each other. I have been fortunate enough to be put in this position, to make a positive influence. Just be yourself and play bold - it’s pretty simple.
