International Jazz Day Celebrations @ CND Speakeasy
Staying true to its convention of getting the best music and cocktails to its patrons, Cocktails & Dreams, Speakeasy hosted the International Jazz Day on April 30, 2015.
30th April is celebrated world over as the International Jazz Day by UNESCO. This day is stamped out to celebrate the historical, cultural, and educational contribution of this famous genre of music. The idea behind celebrating this day is to spread universal mindfulness about this special style of music; and to remind people of what Jazz music stands for.
Popular Jazz performers played at Cocktails & Dreams Speakeasy and this intriguing bar kept filling up with people as they sipped on glasses full of Four Seasons wine.
Four extraordinary groups: Samadhi, Drift The Trio, KitchenSink and Neue Jazz Collective performed live as the night culminated into a mind-blowing 'Jazz Jam" as more artists kept joining the ones who were already playing.
Drift The Trio is a contemporary jazz guitar trio from New Delhi, India. The band has performed both, as a trio and as a part of bigger setups featuring vocalists, saxophonists and different instrumentalists from around the globe. Driven by Drummer Reuben Narain, the band's music is a mixed blend of advanced music styles like Funk, RnB, Fusion and so on with the compositional vision and improvisational styles of jazz greats like John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk and Pat Metheny.
Neue Jazz Collective is a modern Jazz quartet from Delhi. This group brings you music which mixes conventional jazz with present day harmonic sensibilities.
The group started as a collab between pianist/composer Prabir Sekhri and guitar player Bhaskar Gurung. Having worked on a few new compositions together, the duo set out to find a rhythm section that would best compliment their vision for the music. Rahul Rai and Reuben Narain stepped in on bass and drums, respectively, to complete the quartet.
They primarily played music composed by the duo, as well as personal takes on songs that have inspired them over the years. A compelling rhythm section accompanied by lush arrangements and uninhibited impromptu creations made their music edgy, dynamic and absorbing for the listeners at one of Gurgaon's coolest hangouts.
Then came Samadhi which is an experimental 'jazz' trio led by Kartikeya Srivastava. The group features Kartikeya Srivastava on drums, Utsav Lal on Piano and Abhinav Khokhar on Bass.
Kartikeya Srivastavas drumming left everyone awestruck. Kartikeya leads his own trio alongside several other musical collaborations. He is also in the process of writing a book about his musical ideas and philosophy.
Utsav Lal aka "Raga Pianist" with his inimitable playing style and innovative handling of a raga saw the girls swaying from side to side. A disciple of Dhrupad maestro Ustad F.Wasifuddin Dagar and mentored by Sharat Srivastava, Lal has also drawn attention for his collaborative work with Irish and Scottish traditional musicians.
The final band to play was KitchenSink, a group of musicians also from Delhi. Often you will find them playing and improvising over tunes they have written or reinterpreting songs they like. Performing both as an instrumental quartet and with a singer, the band's repertoire includes original tunes, arrangements of Jazz standards and Blues and R&B Music.
The spectacle that Cocktails & Dreams Speakeasy created for the party people in Gurgaon is indescribable. People seemed to enjoy all the cocktails on offer, the wine kept flowing all night and the music was surreal.
